She is the new President of the European Research Council (ERC), as of 1 November 2021. She is full professor at the University of Cologne, Germany, and has served as Director of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) from 2010 to 2021. The European Research Council is the first pan-European funding body for frontier research in all disciplines. Since its start in 2007, more than 12,000 projects and over 10,000 researchers have been selected for funding, 9 of which won the Nobel Prize.

Passionate about fundamental research, she enjoys taking on new challenges and embracing new ideas. She runs two research laboratories in independent fields: Developmental Biology in Heidelberg (EMBL) and Immunology in Cologne (CECAD). She is an elected member of EMBO, the Academia Europaea and the German National Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina), and an Honorary Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in the UK. She is also a Foreign Member of the Royal Society since May 2022.

Maria Leptin ist seit dem 1. November 2021 Präsidentin des Europäischen Forschungsrats und Professorin an der Universität zu Köln. Von 2010 bis 2021 war sie Direktorin der European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). Der Europäische Forschungsrat ist eine renommierte Förderorganisation, die Spitzenforschung in sämtlichen Disziplinen unterstützt. Seit der Gründung im Jahr 2007 wurden mehr als 12.000 Projekte und über 10.000 Wissenschaftler*innen gefördert, von denen 9 den Nobelpreis erhielten. Maria Leptin stellt sich gerne neuen Herausforderungen und geht neue Ideen nach. Sie leitet zwei Forschungslabore in eigenständigen Fachbereichen eines für Entwicklungsbiologie am EMBL in Heidelberg und eines für Immunologie am CECAD-Institut in Köln. Sie ist Mitglied der EMBO, der Academia Europaea und der Deutschen Nationalen Akademie der Wissenschaften Leopoldina und wurde 2022 als auswärtiges Mitglied in die Royal Society aufgenommen.

È professoressa ordinaria presso l’Università di Colonia ed è stata direttrice della European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), l'organizzazione intergovernativa europea per le Scienze della Vita, dal 2010 al 2021. Le piace raccogliere nuove sfide e abbracciare nuove idee. Dirige due laboratori di ricerca in campi indipendenti: di Biologia dello Sviluppo a Heidelberg (EMBL) e di Immunologia a Colonia (CECAD). È stata eletta membro dell'Academia Europaea, dell’Accademia Nazionale Tedesca delle Scienze Leopoldina ed è Honorary Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences del Regno Unito (FMedSci) e Foreign Member of the Royal Society dal maggio 2022.
