My advice to anyone

is to try and find good mentors

and good supervisors.

She is a full professor of Science Communication at Leiden University, science journalist and columnist for the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant and presenter on Dutch television.

After obtaining a PhD in Pure Mathematics, her career followed an atypical path. Because her interest was in improving the communication of science, she decided to do so from within academia and thus returned to academia in 2015. Her research group studies the foundations of science communication, languages and forms of scientific dissemination, with the aim of improving the communication and understanding of scientific issues by the non-specialist public and in this way improving the interaction between science and society.

She is a member of the Supervisory Board of the Rijksmuseum Boerhaave, the Science museum of the city of Leiden, and was the head of the jury for the Libris Literature Prize in 2020.

Ionica Smeets ist Professorin für Wissenschaftskommunikation an der Universität Leiden, Wissenschaftsjournalistin und Kolumnistin für die niederländische Zeitung De Volkskrant sowie Moderatorin im niederländischen Fernsehen. Nach ihrer Promotionin reiner Mathematik schlug sie einen ungewöhnlichen Karriereweg ein. Da sie sich für die Verbesserung der Wissenschaftskommunikation interessierte, beschloss sie, dies innerhalb der akademischen Welt zu tun, und kehrte 2015 an die Universität zurück. Ihre Forschungsgruppe untersucht die Grundlagen der Wissenschaftskommunikation, Sprachen und Formen wissenschaftlicher Verbreitung, mit dem Ziel, die Kommunikation und das Verständnis wissenschaftlicher Themen für die nicht spezialisierte Ö! entlichkeit zu verbessern und so die Interaktion zwischen Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft zu fördern. Sie ist Mitglied des Aufsichtsrats des Rijksmuseum Boerhaave, des Wissenschaftsmuseums der Stadt Leiden, und war 2020 Vorsitzende der Jury für den Libris Literaturpreis.

È professoressa ordinaria di Comunicazione della Scienza presso l’Università di Leida, giornalista scientifica ed editorialista del quotidiano olandese De Volkskrant e presentatrice alla televisione olandese. Dopo aver conseguito un dottorato di ricerca in Matematica pura, la sua carriera ha seguito un percorso atipico. Poichè il suo interesse era di migliorare la comunicazione della scienza, ha deciso di farlo dall'interno del mondo accademico e quindi è tornata in università nel 2015.

Il suo gruppo di ricerca studia le basi della comunicazione della scienza, i linguaggi e le forme della disseminazione scientifica, con l'obiettivo di migliorare la comunicazione e la comprensione di problemi scientifici da parte del pubblico non specialistico e in questo modo rendere migliore l’interazione tra scienza e società.
