My drive today is to empower new generations to do a better job than what we have done with reference to health, not only to the health of people but also of animals, plants, and the environment, from which we are dependent.

She is Senior Fellow of Global Health, Johns Hopkins University - SAIS Europe, Courtesy Professor and director emeritus of the One Health Centre of Excellence at the University of Florida in the United States. She is a virologist and former Italian parliamentarian (2013-2016) known worldwide for her studies in the field of animal-to-human transmissible viral infections and their pandemic potential. In 2006, in the face of the pandemic threat caused by the avian influenza virus, she chose to share the virus' genetic data on open-access, open source digital platforms. This decision helped redefine the policy of international organisations on the transparency of virus genetic data, optimising strategies to address global threats such as pandemics. In 2007, she was named one of the 50 best scientists in the world by Scientific American and in 2008 she was included among the 'Revolutionary Minds' by the American magazine Seed for her leadership role in science politics.

Ilaria Capua ist eine renommierte Virologin und ehemalige italienische Parlamentarierin (2013-2016). Die Professorin und Leiterin des One Health Centre of Excellence an der University of Florida in den Vereinigten Staaten ist weltweit bekannt für ihre Forschung im Bereich der von Tieren auf Menschen übertragbaren Virusinfektionen und deren Pandemiepotenzial. Angesichts der Bedrohung durch die Vogelgrippe-Pandemie beschloss sie 2006, die genetische Daten des Virus auf digitale Open-Source-Plattformen zu verö! entlichen. Diese bahnbrechende Entscheidung trug dazu bei, die Transparenzpolitik internationaler Organisationen in Bezug auf genetische Daten von Viren neu zu defi nieren und Strategien zur Bewältigung globaler Bedrohungen wie Pandemien zu optimieren. Für ihr herausragendes Engagement wurde sie 2007 von Scientifi c American zu einer der 50 besten Wissenschaftler weltweit gewählt.

La mia motivazione è oggi di mettere le nuove generazioni nelle condizioni di fare un lavoro migliore rispetto a quello che abbiamo fatto noi, in riferimento alla salute non solo delle persone ma anche degli animali, delle piante e dell’ambiente, da cui siamo dipendenti.

È Senior Fellow of Global Health, Johns Hopkins University - SAIS Europe, Bologna, Courtesy Professor e direttore emerito del One Health Center of Excellence dell’Università della Florida negli Stati Uniti. È una virologa ed ex parlamentare italiana (2013-2016) conosciuta in tutto il mondo per i suoi studi nel campo delle infezioni virali trasmissibili dagli animali all’uomo e del loro potenziale pandemico. Nel 2006, a fronte della minaccia pandemica causata dal virus dell’influenza aviaria, ha scelto di condividere i dati genetici del virus su piattaforme digitali ad accesso libero, open source. Questa decisione ha contribuito a ridefinire la politica delle organizzazioni internazionali in materia di trasparenza dei dati genetici dei virus, ottimizzando le strategie per affrontare minacce globali, come le pandemie. Nel 2007 è stata inserita tra i 50 migliori scienziati al mondo da Scientific American e nel 2008 è stata inclusa fra le “Menti Rivoluzionarie” dalla rivista americana Seed per il suo ruolo di leadership nella politica della scienza.
