She is a group leader at the Hubrecht Institute in Utrecht, the Netherlands, leading the laboratory of Chromatin Structure and Dynamics since 2018. She describes herself as "a structural biologist with a love for chromatin", the complex of DNA and proteins that makes up chromosomes and encodes for genetic and epigenetic information in human cells. Using a combination of biochemistry and molecular and structural biology approaches, her group studies how this information is faithfully transmitted during cell division. This process is crucial for preventing cellular transformation that leads to diseases such as cancer.

She is a winner of the European Research Council Starting Grant 2019, the prestigious funding for young researchers from the European Research Council.

Francesca Mattiroli ist Gruppenleiterin am Hubrecht Institute in Utrecht, Niederlande, und führt seit 2018 das Labor für Chromatinstruktur und -dynamik. Sie bezeichnet sich selbst als «Strukturbiologin mit einer Leidenschaft für Chromatin» – jenes komplexe Zusammenspiel aus DNA und Proteinen, das Chromosomen bildet und genetische und epigenetische Informationen in menschlichen Zellen kodiert. Mit einer Kombination aus Biochemie, molekularer und struktureller Biologie untersucht ihre Gruppe, wie diese Informationen während der Zellteilung zuverlässig übertragen werden. Dieser Prozess ist von entscheidender Bedeutung, um die zellulären Veränderungen zu verhindern, die zu Krankheiten wie Krebs führen. Francesca Mattiroli ist die stolze Preisträgerin eines Starting Grants des Europäischen Forschungsrats aus dem Jahr 2019, einer renommierten Förderung für junge Forscherinnen und Forscher.

È junior group leader alla guida del laboratorio di Struttura e Dinamica della Cromatina presso l'Hubrecht Institute di Utrecht nei Paesi Bassi. Si definisce “una biologa strutturale con un amore per la cromatina”, il complesso di DNA e proteine che costituisce i cromosomi e che codifica per le informazioni genetiche ed epigenetiche nelle cellule umane. Usando una combinazione di approcci di biochimica e di biologia molecolare e strutturale, il suo gruppo studia come queste informazioni sono trasmesse fedelmente durante la divisione cellulare.

È vincitrice dell’European Research Council Starting Grant 2019, il prestigioso finanziamento per i giovani ricercatori del Consiglio Europeo della Ricerca.
