One word Fiona gives as a gift to young aspiring scientists is: “Boldness” 

She is a world leader in stem cell research and regenerative medicine. In January 2022, she became Director of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) and a grouop leader at EMBL Heidelberg. EMBO is the European intergovernmental organisation comprising more than 1800 leading life science researchers, including 90 Nobel Prize winners. She has been director of the Centre for Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine at King’s College London, UK, from 2012 to 2022 and was on secondment as executive chair of the Medical Research Council from 2018 to 2022. She made fundamental discoveries about the genes and mechanisms controlling self-renewal and differentiation of skin stem cells. She is an elected member of EMBO, the Academia Europaea and the US National Academy of Sciences, and a Fellow of the UK Royal Society (FRS) and Academy of Medical Sciences. In 2016, she received the FEBS | EMBO Women in Science Award.

Fiona Watt ist eine weltweit führende Forscherin auf dem Gebiet der Stammzellforschung und der regenerativen Medizin. Im Januar 2022 wurde sie Gruppenleiterin am EMBL Heidelberg und Direktorin der European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), eine europäische zwischenstaatliche Organisation, die mehr als 1800 führende Forscher auf dem Gebiet der Lebenswissenschaften umfasst, darunter 90 Nobelpreisträger*innen. Von 2012 bis 2022 leitete sie das Zentrum für Stammzellen und Regenerative Medizin am King’s College London und war Vorsitzende des Medical Research. Ihre bahnbrechenden Entdeckungen zu Genen und Mechanismen, die die Selbsterneuerung und Di! erenzierung von Hautstammzellen steuern, haben die Wissenschaft bereichert. Fiona Watt ist ein gewähltes Mitglied von EMBO, der Academia Europaea und der US National Academy of Sciences. Zudem trägt sie die Ehrentitel Fellow der Royal Society (FRS) und Fellow der Academy of Medical Sciences im Vereinigten Königreich.
