She is the Director General of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), Europe's life sciences laboratory with more than 110 research groups dedicated to molecular biology, supported by 28 member states. Her lab is based at the EMBL headquarters in Heidelberg. She is a full professor at the Collège de France and holds the Chair of Epigenetics and Cellular Memory in Paris, France.

A British geneticist, her discoveries in the field of epigenetics and her creativity in understanding how genes work have earned her the title of Science Visionary from the New York Times and the international l'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science 2020 award. She is an elected member of the Royal Society in the UK and the US National Academy of Sciences. In April 2021 she joined the Scientific Council of the World Health Organisation.

Edith Heard ist die Generaldirektorin des Europäischen Laboratoriums für Molekularbiologie (EMBL), einem führenden Forschungslabor für Lebenswissenschaften in Europa, das von mehr als 110 Forschungsgruppen getragen und von 28 Mitgliedsstaaten unterstüzt wird. Ihr Labor befi ndet sich am Hauptsitz des EMBL in Heidelberg. Sie ist Professorin am Collège de France und hat den Lehrstuhl für Epigenetik und zelluläres Gedächtnis in Paris inne. Die britische Genetikerin wurde aufgrund ihrer Entdeckungen auf dem Gebiet der Epigenetik und ihrer Kreativität beim Verständnis der Funktionsweise von Genen von der New York Times als «Science Visionary » und mit dem internationalen «L’Oréal-UNESCOPreis For Women in Science 2020» ausgezeichnet. Sie ist gewähltes Mitglied der Royal Society im Vereinigten Königreich und der US National Academy of Sciences. Im April 2021 trat sie dem Wissenschaftlichen Rat der Weltgesundheitsorganisation bei.
